First Blades On Ice!

Chloe Squibb has been keeping an eye on Daniels Pond In South Hope. Her vigilance paid off today.

The ice was about 1 1/4”, but not a bubble of air in it.

The lesson, as always in this sport, is that the prize goes to those drive. Read between the lines of the forecast and get out there and have a look.

Thanks to Steve Lamb’s decades of support for the NEIYA and the sport of iceboating, we are once again able to hold our Off-Ice Tune-Up.

Steve and Linda are graciously opening the doors of the Arthur C. Lamb shop to us again for this year’s Off-Ice Tune-Up, scheduled for Saturday, November 29th. Yes, Thanksgiving weekend!

Take a break from the post-holiday routine and stop by. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone.

If you have any interest in iceboating this is the place to be on the 29th. The Iceboating welcome mat is out. Come on down.

Date: Saturday, November 29th
Time: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Location: Arthur C. Lamb Company 85 Jackson St, Canton, MA 02021
Refreshments: Served continuously throughout the day
Google Directions: https://goo.gl/maps/3zuJS2G2Nm3BwLYs5

We have a full schedule of events but want to focus on the new iceboaters. Especially those that are struggling to figure it all out and get themselves and their boats on the ice for the first time. Calling all Newbies here is your chance to have even the questions you didn’t know to ask answered. Bring your boats down to be surveyed by a collective of maybe 1000 years of iceboating experience.

We will have ongoing Iceboat educational topics backed by the experts amongst us. Including but not limited to.

  • Rigging your new boat
  • Right of Way Rules
  • Runner choke alignment techniques
  • Runner Care
  • Ice checking Round Table Discussion

The season is upon us take advantage of this opportunity. Pull your old boat out of the cellar, barn, attic or where ever and bring it down. This is the year to follow your dream and hit the ice.

Think Ice,

Plymouth Frozen

With the end of the interminable wind and calm sub freezing nights, Plymouth has ice.

Lockley skipper Arrun sent this photo, and the one below showing the 9/32” thick plate.

What will happen in the coming week? Temps are flirting with sub-freezing but not making any firm commitments.

Stand by for updates.

Thanks Arrun!

Where’s the Ice?

Scattered across the vast plains of eastern Alberta are numerous small lakes and frog ponds. Winters are long there, and get off to an early start compared with that country south of the border. DN’er Paul Chaimberland comes from there, and his family lives not far from Owlseye Lake. It’s shallow and freezes early. Early in Alberta means October. Paul’s mother keeps an eye on it for him, but last week Paul reported that it was two weeks behind schedule, which does not bode well for the Great Western Challenge, and the ripple effect may trickle down to our first ice, Plymouth Pond.

The chain of events brings to mind the theory of the butterfly fluttering in the Amazon, having profound and distant effects on all kinds of things. But things are looking up. Paul is on his way there at this very minute, confident that the latest weather forecast will bring him a solid plate of black ice the moment he arrives, twenty-five hundred miles from his home near Albany.

The fact that Paul chooses to listen to the weatherman and not his mother gives one pause. Who would you believe? How many weathermen have led us astray? Mothers, on the other hand, will do anything to get their sons to come for a visit. The promise of black ice, a warm dinner, and a short list of handyman duties is a tough siren to resist.

Stand by for updates: will it be Mom or the weatherman?

Here’s a beautifully made four minute video ad for Skoda, featuring Polish iceboater Łukasz Zakrzewski. It appears to be filmed in Finland; the reindeer is a dead giveaway. The language actually switches from Polish to Finnish about halfway through. Listen carefully; you can’t miss it.

Hopefully you’ll see that blowing snow, dark and cold, and can’t wait to get out in it.
