DN Worlds Warm Up Report

This from Karen Binder. We have two Mainers in the line up: Dave Silsby and Jeff Roseberry. Best of luck to all the racers!

The lake is huge, hard and fast. Today most competitors (107 sailors are registered!) rigged and got lots of practice laps in and the wind built as the day progressed.

Most sailors were experimenting with 90 and 95 degree runners and switching in flatter sails by late afternoon.

Watching the coordination, communication and team work of the polish sailors is very impressive.

Jeff, Paul, and I were in several scratch races today and did a good job of being fast and competitive with the Canadian Ice Force.

There are 27 sailors ranked in the top ten and there will be three fleets racing. Even with being ranked 13th I imagine I might have to race the qualifier.

More tomorrow!

Karen Binder, DN 5630

Long Island DN Championships

While we shovel yet more snow in Maine, and the DN Worlds are about to begin in Wisconsin on lovely ice, The Lake Ronkonkokama Ice Boat Club had their first regatta in over a decade this past weekend. Here’s an excellent story on the event.

These guys have well attended club meetings, maintain unusual traditions, and generally exhibit a level of enthusiasm completely out of proportion to the actual sailing. If any club deserved a break, this is the one!

Embden Pond 1/27

Who knows why some lakes blow clear while others don’t? Embden didn’t completely blow clear in our latest blizzard, but it mostly did. What was left is powder puffs of no consequence and hard packed bumps. But with no other ice in Maine, who’s to complain?

Eight sailors found their way to this hidden lake. Our hosts, Bruce and Josie Dow, had offered a warm-up by the fire in their camp. Bruce had bought an older DN a few years ago but never sailed it until today. With seven “coaches” he got the boat dialed in and was sailing fast before lunch.

The wind was right down the middle of the five mile lake, so no reaching around today. Even the Cheapskates made it down and back in the gusty wind. Linc Davis brought along his spare boat and put his old friend Ricky in it, gave a few words of wisdom and sent him off. In no time at all he was swapping tacks with Linc, more often ahead than behind.

Thanks to Sandy Butterfield for organizing the line-up. Ben Fuller and John Hanson round out the fleet, with Brian McNiff back in the pits trying to get his DN steering to function. Getting oneself to a lake with good conditions far from home is an accomplishment in itself: it is NOT the time to be fixing your boat. Our days on the ice are far too precious to waste.
In the background is Bruce and Josie’s camp. Not too shabby! Josie whipped up a delicious lasagna for lunch, topped off with absolutely first class coffee.

If anyone wants to go down to Athens on the Hudson with iceboats to sail with the stern steerers, let me know. It’s a once in a decade opportunity, and the way things are going this might be the last time.
Not much hope here in Maine, unless someone else pops up to exclaim how wonderful is THEIR lake!

Meanwhile, at Embden

Looks good for tomorrow. Nils and Guillaume sailed the entire lake today and report a little rough but otherwise nice. One dodgy spot where a stream enters on the west side about half way up.

Boat launch ramp at the south end, 10:00. Up past Skowhegan and hang a left.

Lake Champlain

Jeff and Paul are scouting for alternate sites for the NA’s/Worlds and found this amazing plate at Port Henry, west side, south end of the lake. From what they can see it goes all the way to Canada.

We could have our Hundred Mile Race here, 50 up and 50 back.

No plans to sail it as far as we know, but there it is…
