2023 CIBC spring meeting

One of the rainiest days of spring didn’t dampen a good turnout for CIBC’s annual spring meeting and potluck at Camp Kieve, overlooking a liquid, and wet, Lake Damariscotta last Sunday.

After enough socializing to allow for stragglers, President Buchholz called the meeting to order with a summary of the 2022/2023 season. Despite all the oddball weather, not only was ice found, but good ice was found, with many exceptional days, made even better by the lack of ruts caused by snowmobiles and trucks on the ice. With the exception of an early season run to Canada, all the club sailing was done in Maine. Further discussion included ice scouting and reporting and disseminating that information. Congratulations to John Stanton, awarded the Warner St. Clair Trophy, the iceboat appreciation award, for all his work on our website and its maintenance. Congratulations also to Jeff Roseberry, winner of the Link Davis Cup as well as the 100-Mile Race. Thanks to all who contributed to the good food that followed.

A highlight, in addition to the lobster mac and cheese, was Michael Young’s new iceboating board game. The prototype was spread out, and eight competitors battled it out. Bill Bunting outsailed us all and took the win, while Curtis Rindlaub, Jeff Roseberry, and Michael Young came in for a photo finish second place. The game was so well calibrated that Dave Fortier drew the “got wet” card.

Contact Michael Young (michaelyoungswh@gmail.com) about ordering the game. Where else can you sail faster than Roseberry, Fortier, or Buchholz?

Apr 26

Please join Henry Bossett and me for a virtual presentation hosted by the Cape Cod Maritime Museum on Sunday, April 30, at 1:30 PM CT / 2:30 PM ET. Register for the event here.

We’ll discuss various topics, including some Cape Cod area’s ice sailing history, such as this video about the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (Spars) and iceboating. (Video ink.)

Via the Cape Cod Maritime Museum:
While sailors in New England spent the winter dreaming of getting back on the water, sailors in the competitive world of ice yachting have been busy! Join us for this talk by Deb Whitehorse, who grew up above her father’s iceboat shop in Monona, Wisconsin, as well as Henry Bosset, who’s first sailing experience was in M16 Scows. He moved on to the E-Scow Fleet and eventually started crewing on offshore boats from 24’ on up.
Deb is the longtime Secretary of the Four Lakes Ice Yacht Club in Madison, WI, and a member of their Honor Roll. She is also the Secretary and Treasurer of the International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association, the world’s largest ice sailing class.
Henry is a three time DN Ice Boat World Champion, as well as claiming North American and Eastern Championship honors in the DN, MScow, and Tornado classes.
