Classic DN sailor Dan West died recently. He was a good sailing buddy of Wolfie’s, constantly upgrading his old boat just to keep his pal honest, in the great tradition of all iceboaters. He sailed often on North Pond, Warren, with the Friendship fleet, and always showed up for the big days on Damariscotta. Dan was an sculptor of amazing talent. His wildlife bronze castings are represented by the Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland. And he made an annual pilgrimage to upper Bay of Fundy to harvest driftwood for his work. From his camp on the beach he’d wander for days looking for pieces that spoke to him. A man truly at peace with the world.
