Eastern Landsailing Championship

With just over a week to go, the energy is ramping up. Sailors from Wisconsin, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are signed up and ready to go. Last minute projects are under way with late nights on the horizon.

The racing schedule is from Friday 5/13 until Sunday afternoon 5/15. A few will be there Thursday, 5/12, setting up. Directions are simple: drive north on I-95 until you are above the latitude of both Quebec and Prince Edward Island. At Caribou get off US Rt. 1 and take Rt. 89 towards Limestone. It’s a left. In a few miles you will pass an entrance to Loring Commerce Center on your left with a gas station on the corner. Best not to enter here, but carry on another couple of miles to the four corners with the flashing light. Cote’s Auto is on the corner. Turn left. You will enter the base around a sharp left bend in the road. A bit further on, on the left, is a derelict building. Just there on the right is your turn. It’s the first right you come to. Go up the hill, bear right at the top.

On the other hand you’ve been driving for what seems like forever and there is a sign for your destination. How heartbreaking it could be to just drive on by. You can turn left there and enter the base about a mile down on the right. Go a short ways until you come to Wienmann Rd. Hang a right and take it all the way until the end. Turn right, take that to the end, turn left. Take that to the end and turn right. You are now at the beginning of the regatta. At the end of this video you’ll see two hangars. Ours is the one on the left. Hopefully it will be open when you get there.

Spring Meeting

Official minutes will follow at some point; Secretary Rindlaub is preparing his new boat for an offshore passage from South Carolina to Maine just now. Thanks to Larry Mazoway for stepping in as secretary today. About fifteen iceboaters showed. Rob Dmitrieff brough a photo from 1928 showing a rotor powered stern steerer on Androscoggin Lake. Noboby knew exatcly how they work, but the point was made that perhaps there is a reason they didn’t catch on.

The Warner St. Clair Iceboat Appreciation Trophy was presented to ace ice scout Bob Lombardo. He’s always willing to skate the plate and send good photos and accurate reports. Thanks Bob!

Milo Fleming, last years recipient, presents Bob Lombardo with the trophy.

We discussed the fine points of making a Hardway attempt, communication within the club, and our endless search for a reliable web cam on Damariscotta Lake.

Treasurer Gagnon and Secretary Rindlaub were presented with club jackets for their tireless work running the club’s business.

Another fine potluck followed, with a great selection of stews, salads and desserts. Thanks to all who brought such great food. And thanks to Camp Kieve for hosting us and opening up the great hall, and even making a pot of fresh coffee for us!

This site will now be hijacked by those guys who sail on asphalt:

Welcome China

DN icesailing in China – YouTube

From IDNIYRA Europe:

“Our family of icesailing nations grew by a new member in Asia!

This weekend at our annual National Secretaries’ Meeting we had some very special guests in attendance:
On behalf of the Chinese DN Fleet, Mr. Wang Qiguang chairman of the Jinzhou Yachting and Sailing Association and Jinzhou Bay Sailing Club, Mr. Wu Ming director of the club and Ms. Zhu Di, Chinese-Canadian interpreter was also invited to serve throughout the process.

As they told us, in the past three years, during the introduction, training and participation in- and hosting of various icesailing competitions, they stumbled across pictures and videos of DN iceboats on the Internet. The appearance, structure, speed and specifications of the DN immediately aroused everyone’s interest. In 2019, they purchased plans from North America and manufactured a few of China’s first iceboats of the class. Last year contact was established with IDNIYRA – Europe and official talks began on joining the Organisation. We received their application of membership earlier this year.
At the same time, they have also received strong support and approval from the Chinese Sailing and Windsurfing Association. They plan to join the our association as a local organisation, and at the same time, continue to promote the DN icesailing across the country.

After an impressive presentation and interview, the national representatives unanimously approved the membership application.

We wholeheartedly welcome the Chinese Fleet in our Class Association!”
