Ice conditions 4/5

Ice surface about #5. Not ideal conditions for the 100 mile race, but the sailing is good. We’ll be on the ice today until sunset and tomorrow. If we have a consensus, we will set marks for a 50 mile race in the morning.

Another Barn Job and Divine Intervention

Fred Wardwell, our senior CIBC member called some time ago to say his neighbor has a “30 foot antique ice boat”in his barn since he bought the place 25 years ago, would I like to go see it? Well of course but with one proviso, just look and pix, no mindless enthusiasm about rescuing it. That was a month or so ago. Now it turns out the barn owner was tired of tripping over long pieces of wood and heavy cast iron runners and had started to take the smaller pieces to the dump when the barn was struck by lightening and burned to the ground ice boat and all. Sic gloria mundi or something like that.

Runners and Sailing

Jeff Kester is considering making another batch of 42″ runners. He sold out of the last run and if there are enough commitments he”ll invest in a big plate of steel. He has two pairs already sold. They look like this:

You can make the stiffener yourself, or find someone to do it for you. Contact him at Jeff Kester

And yes, the Fat Lady has sung. But we’ll be having an encore at Lac St. Francois in Lambton, Quebec, this coming Monday and Tuesday. It looks like this:

Yes, it looks dark and wet, but the temperature was 50 when this was taken today. It’s thicker than a 12″ drill bit and no obvious hazzards could be seen. Of course it always the un-obvious ones that get you but either way we’re going sailing. The temps won’t be above freezing from tonight until Wednesday thanks to the Polar Vortex, the last gasp of a challenging winter. Think of it not so much as “iceboating” per se, but just something fun to do with friends on a lovely spring day.

Spring CIBC Newsletter

We have been having some issues with labeling of newsletters. The Spring issue was mailed 2 days ago. Some 30 members still had not paid dues according to the Secretary’s records and were not sent a newsletter. If you remember paying dues and do not get a newsletter in the next day or so give me a call at 207 596 2095. The Treasurer, Jim Gagnon, has been meticulous so call me. Thanks. Lloyd
